Yes friends. WordPress has released yet another version of their awesome software. As of this date the current series is 4.4 with version 4.4.2 which was released on February 2, 2016
This security patch comes as WordPress versions 4.4.1 and earlier are affected by two security issues: a possible SSRF for certain local URIs, reported by Ronni Skansing; and an open redirection attack, reported by Shailesh Suthar.
In addition to the security issues above, WordPress 4.4.2 fixes 17 bugs from 4.4 and 4.4.1
If you log in to your dashboard and it says you are running some other version of WordPress you should update your software right away.
None of these other versions are safe to use, except the latest in the 4.4 series, which is actively maintained.
Are WP updates really necessary?
Yes. WordPress websites MUST be updated including plugins, themes and framework anytime you see that an update is available. If you don’t, your site will eventually be *hacked* because of a security bug in old software. The contents of your site will be replaced with something malicious, and your e-mail will be used to send offensive spam.
Regular and routine maintenance is part of website ownership. They are important and sometimes necessary for a WordPress professional to handle; particularly with major dot releases.
Your website should be an asset, NOT a detriment.
Out-of-date WordPress sites will get hacked which makes them a detriment. Not to mention costly to repair.
